Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”

March 26, 2014

Yesterday night March 26, 2014 Casual Outing at Santiago's Bodega:

"14 of us had dinner last night at Santiago's Bodega in North Orlando, and everyone raved about this Spanish inspired Tapas Cuisine (smaller portions). The food tasted wonderful on every level for every item selected showed a perfect balance of taste and spices used. The quality of the ingredients was top notch so was the presentation. The variety of the selection was great with lots to choose between starters, soups, salads, and great desserts.

The Service was professional and attentive even if the place was very busy (on a tuesday night, it says something!). The ambiance was "energetic", and warm. The prices were sometimes judged as a little high. To me the prices could be better explained as when we think "tapas" we see smaller portions. In this case, the portions were big enough, and 2 or max 3 dishes were plenty.

As a summary, we warmly recommend to all of us to go and dine at "Santiago's Bodega".

The JD Power survey filled by 12 of the attendees gave an overall note of 9.34/10 and the recommendation to family and friends of 9.7/10...GREAT for all of us!!!"

The price paid went between $20 & $28 plus beverage, tax and gratuities.

Pierre’s Food & Wine Club Experience

Krazy Greek Kitchen  ~  Downtown Lake Mary  ~  Diner on Monday December 2, 2013

27 of us showed up at 7pm last night for diner, and were promptly and graciously greeted by Alex.

We have to put into perspective that the restaurant opened the same day for lunch….

The service was efficient, very friendly with the staff (John and Debbie) very knowledgeable and able to pronounce the Greek terms that none of us could…

The quality of the food was exquisite for most of the items; the portions were ample and presentation very nice.
The Greek wines we selected were pleasurable, smooth and perfect match for the food.

Overall great value, nice ambiance, and wonderful staff, and thanks to Christina and Andreas for an authentic and very pleasurable Greek experience. We highly recommend the place and ask you to remember that the place just opened.

Pierre’s Food & Wine Club Experience

Summary of Tuesday night "Casual Outing" at  The Coq au Vin ~ Orlando

“Professional  Service, Great ambiance, and Excellent Food” were a few of the words used on Tuesday evening to describe the beautiful experience at Le Coq au Vin in South Orlando. French food was greatly appreciated with an Oktoberfest prix fix menu.21 attendees rated the experience 9.0/10 (using a JD Power type survey) and 9.2/10 as a recommendation to friends or family to attend such an event.

A few highlights:

Highest mark was given to the quality of the service with special appreciation for France, Philippe and Robby. Also a special mention was noted for the professionalism and great welcome from Jaimee.

The ambiance was the next highest rated area.

The food also received high mark with in particular all the soups (French Onion, Pumpkin and Lentils), the Scallops. Grit and Shrimps, Wild Boar were among the favorite entrées. And last, but not least… All the Soufflés had raving comments, above all the Grand Marnier and Caramel.

One in one and again, it was a great experience. We do not hesitate to recommend visiting Le Coq au Vin Orlando on your own. The food is definitively French inspired and the setting both cozy and romantic. A few dishes that are “staples” of Coq au Vin will request a precise description from your server if you are not familiar with them. Do not hesitate to ask, as all servers we dealt with were highly knowledgeable and very friendly.

Next outing is in the preparation. We have a few options in mind. Stay tuned.

Pierre’s Food & Wine Club Experience

Summary of last night "Wine Dinner" at the Marriott Orlando-Lake Mary

“Wonderful, excellent, creative, delicious” were a few of the words used last evening to describe the extraordinary job done by Chef Rob and his teams at Bistro 1501 of the Orlando-Lake Mary Marriott in his “Tribute to South American Cuisine” (mainly Argentina & Chile). 23 attendees rated the experience 9.4/10 (using a JD Power type survey) and 9.5/10 as a recommendation to friends or family to attend such an event.

A few highlights among so many beautiful details were the “Ceviche with Corn Nuts”, the “Skirt Steak with Chimichuri” and the 3 kinds of Desserts.  Chef Rob chose to be “classical” in his approach of spectacular cooking to respect both traditions and flavors. He used a small committee of Argentinian friends as advisors to be true to original dishes. The execution has been flawless and highly enjoyable in every detail. The wine pairing was enjoyed as extremely appropriate and the explanations of the wines were very well received also. Finally both the service and the ambiance received high marks.

One in one and again, it was a great experience. Another dinner might come before the end of the year, stay tuned.”

Olivier & Marie-France

Do not forget to visit Bistro 1501 at the Orlando-Lake Mary Marriott as it had been constantly rated as the Best Sunday Brunch in Seminole County for years in several highly regarded publications. Olivier

Pierre’s Food & Wine Club Experience

 Last Casual Outing: Last Night

Carmel Café & Wine Bar

Overall this was a great experience as the diners gave 9.6 out of 10 on a JD Power type survey.
(This is the second best casual outing rating after the “New” Terra Mia in May 2013)
The highest grade went to the Service that was attentive, fast, and well-paced.
Then the quality of the Food that has been seen as tasty, creative, and well executed.
The Ambiance/Décor was also rated high, just the lighting was dimmed somewhat too much.
The Wine List has great value wines, and what we selected was perfect with our dishes.
The prices were fair, just if you are on a budget be careful with the temptations of
smaller size dishes (more affordable) encouraging you to “eat” more.
 The desserts were all fabulous…
Nice innovative electronic tablets with pictures and details of every dish and drinks were available to select your dinner.
One in one a wonderful experience where everyone was not rushed to go home.
Next, after Labor Day, we have to find a place as good and welcoming.
Many thanks to Mr. Michael Fernandez (the Manager) and his great team in the dining room, but also in the kitchen.
We encourage you to visit “Carmel Café & Wine Bar in Winter Park”
140 N. Orlando Avenue    ~   407-513-4912

If you visit some of theses restaurants on your own, do not forget to mention the write up from "Pierre’s Food & Wine Club Experience", Thank you very much.

Summary of Pierre’s latest Wine & Food Experience:

Discovery of Carmel Café & Wine Bar

Last evening (Tuesday, August 13th), we had dinner for the first time at Carmel Café and Wine Bar in Winter Park that just opened a few weeks ago.

As soon as you push the front door you are taken by the “high energy” of wonderfully welcoming staff, contemporary and warm décor and great atmosphere of a busy place, even on a Tuesday evening.

The overall theme is Mediterranean and trendy… Food was creative, tasty and well executed. We enjoyed beautiful soup, edamame hummus, braised short ribs, chocolate dessert and more. Prices are moderate, around $20/30 per person, plus beverage, for creative cuisine and great quality. The service was quick and efficient. We recommend Annie. You can select your dinner on regular menus or on hi-tech tablets with details and pictures of what you will have…and a choice of pairing wine to go well with your dish…

For those of you who want to join us as a group, we plan an outing for dinner next Tuesday (August 20th), we will meet at Pierre’s at 7:15pm for car-pooling or at the restaurant in Winter Park at 7:45pm.

In both cases please let us know for reservation as the restaurant is very busy every day.

For those of you who are out of town or not able to attend we encourage you go to Carmel Café on your own and mention Pierre’s Wine and Food Experience.
Thank you very much.

These wines are fun and can pair with lots of seasonal foods. Most healthy foods from the Mediterranean Diet and wines health benefits

A massive new study of the Mediterranean Died published in the New England Journal of Medicine provides powerful confirmation of the diet’s cardiovascular health consumption of olive oil, nuts, and fish – and often red wine - can lower risks of heart disease. The study echoes numerous studies in the past decade with the same findings. The study did not focus on wine but refers to red wine as a “salient component” of the Mediterranean Diet. More details can be found in the Wine Spectator issue of May 31, 2013, p. 21. At Pierre’s free Wine Tasting this Thursday you will sample a Mediterranean veggie soup.

Provence up-date #2: Rosé wines by Angelina Joly & Brad Pitt

It was not enough that Pierre’s Wine Cellar sells the most rosé wines of Central Florida, and that I grew up there overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Pierre’s also has great stories from this uniquely beautiful and “sunny” area.
. Château Miraval just released its higher end rosé. This wine was raised on an 1000 acres estate owned by… Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt… Their consultant, a famous French winery owner, says: “Angelina and Brad wanted to be involved in the whole process from the shape of the bottle to the perfect blend”. The story can be found in the Wine Spectator of May 31, 2013, p. 16.  The wine is organic and the estate is located in the first French county growing only organic fruits and vegetables…I am hoping to get a few bottles, stay tunes if interested.

New at Pierre’s this past week

Local Cancer Research Fund Raising
This fundraising “Toast to the Cure” was presented by Phi Beta Psi and gathered more than 100 attendees at Pierre’s Saturday April 20th, and raised more than $2,000. Several local merchants, including Orchids by Trish at the Farmers’ Market, René Clinical Hypnotic, Pierre’s Wine Cellar or Linda Cara Aesthetics gave prizes for the Silent Auction. The favorite wine of the evening was the Trivento Malbec from Argentina.
